Inside Line Promotions – WILMOT, Wis. (June 4, 2018) – Greg Wilson has a pep in his step.
“For the first time in a long time I’m smiling about going racing,” he beamed.
Wilson and his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics, DNC Hydraulics and Gear Alloy backed team posted its first top-10 finish of the season during World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competition last Friday before missing a second straight top 10 by only one position on Saturday.
“It was nice to have two good runs,” he said. “It was a lot of work from Charlotte to the races last week with building a car and traveling. We also did some work on our motor program at a dyno. I want to thank Joe Devin and the crew at DRC Chassis for giving us an opportunity to make some of those changes. It was a good confidence booster to run well last weekend.”
Wilson kicked off the weekend on Friday at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., during the Rumble in Michigan. He qualified 17th quickest before advancing from sixth to fifth place in a heat race, which locked him into the 14th starting position in the A Main.
“We were learning from the changes that we made,” he said. “It was like starting over again. Our qualifying time put us in position to be competitive even though it was mediocre. We got better in the heat and then took another step forward in the main event.
“We fell back at the beginning of the main before there was a red flag. I didn’t feel very good so we made some changes to compensate for what was going on. That told us with what the car was acting like and the changes we made, it’s the opposite of what we’ve been feeling. That was the key.”
Wilson had his best outing of the season once the race restarted as he maneuvered to an eighth-place finish.
The weekend wrapped up the following night at Wilmot Raceway for the Badger 40. Wilson was in the same position as he entered the main event starting on the outside of the seventh row when a rain storm hit the area and delayed the action.
“We’ve really struggled on wet tracks,” he said. “It rained at Wilmot and we weren’t too bad. I’m pretty excited to get going here. It was nice to feel that after all the work we put in we’ve had some improvement.”
Wilson gained a trio of positions once the main event started on a fast track that made passing difficult. His 11th-place result was his second best of the season to Friday’s finish.
Wilson is scheduled to compete this Tuesday at Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Ill., during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown and Thursday through Saturday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., during the 40th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals with the World of Outlaws.
He also has a Hercules Tires dealership visit on Wednesday at Samaritan Tire South in Minneapolis, Minn., from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
