The IRA sanctioned AutoMeter Wsconsin wingLESS Sprint Series set yet another milestone recently, as the unique group which is just in their 4th season, topped their previously highest single event car count, as 37 cars signed into Wilmot Raceway for their July 7th event. Youngster Nathan Crane picked up his first series win in that event. Then the very next night the series moved over to Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie as part of the big Pepsi Nationals show, where 32 cars signed in, and 8-time IRA 410 winged sprint champ Bill Balog took the checker.
The two engine option class, a GM604 or build your own spec engine, is without question the biggest series success story in the sprint car industry from a participation perspective. Other than the engine a WI wingLESS car is the same as any major series car, the only difference is the engine. The series runs on H series (or Medium) Hoosier Tires as part of their 4-corner Hoosier tire agreement. The series has drawn competitors from a wide variety of motorsport backgrounds. Drivers have come out of the winged ranks, Midget ranks, Modified and Street Stocks, 4 cyl Bandit/Hornets, go karts, mini sprints, Legends, and even some have made this class their first race driving experience ever. What is cool is, all have adapted well and are competitive.
The AutoMeter WI wingLESS Sprint Series will be at Wilmot Raceway July 21st & 28th, before several will take on the POWRI WAR Wildcard League at Wilmot Aug 4th, and Angell Park Aug 5th.
