Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (May 13, 2019) – Sammy Swindell and Thone Motorsports are venturing to Wisconsin this weekend to compete during a trio of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions races.
The action begins on Friday at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot before shifting to Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth on Saturday. The weekend concludes on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie.
“It’s been a while since I’ve raced at Wilmot, but we ran Plymouth and Angell Park last year,” he said. “A couple of weeks ago we had some pretty good laps at Jacksonville Speedway, which is a little smaller. I think we have a direction to go and be pretty good. I feel we have as good a shot to win as anybody this weekend.”
The team is coming off a frustrating weekend at Eldora Speedway, where rain wiped out the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series finale on Saturday following a sour Friday evening.
“It began Friday morning when we out to the truck and it wouldn’t start,” Swindell said. “We messed around and got some batteries in it. That didn’t fix it. They got a starter on it and that didn’t fix it. We got someone to take me to the track, where Amy had the t-shirt trailer and my dually. By the time we got back to the track it was after 5 p.m. We were a little behind. The generator is on the toter home so we didn’t have any air or lights. It was like we were always behind all night.”
Swindell qualified fifth quickest in his group out of two dozen competitors. That earned a starting spot on the outside of the front row in a heat race. Unfortunately, Swindell was penalized a row for not being in staging on time.
“We were parked back behind so you couldn’t see anything,” he said. “As soon as they started pushing out the first heat I was in the car, but we didn’t get over there in time and we got sent back a row. Generally in the heats there’s not a lot of passing so we had a shot at making the dash starting second.”
Swindell was able to gain a position to finish third in the heat race, which locked him into the 15th starting position for the main event.
“From the second race of the night to last race of the night there was lot of racing that went on,” he said. “We made a couple of changes, but the car was way too loose. We struggled with that. It was so loose getting into the corner you’d have to slow down on the bottom. You couldn’t run the top because you’d slide up. I was running the middle. I had to make a perfect lap around the middle like I was on pavement. Any time I stepped over that a little bit the backend was out.
“We learned a lot of stuff. We got to looking at pictures of our car compared to others. I have a pretty good idea where I was wrong so I’m hoping we learned a lot from that whenever we come back. That was our first race to run on a bigger, faster track. Running the high-speed place there were a couple of things off with some of the stuff with the tires and the car that you have to do. I haven’t run a lot of 410 races the last couple of years so I’m a little behind, but stuff we did run a couple of years ago doesn’t seem to be the way it is now. I have to get up to speed with that.”
Swindell ended with a 23rd-place finish.
