(Wilmot, Wis., Tuesday, June 29, 2021)--A first time winner and a snapped streak were among the highlights of the Second Annual Carload Fireworks Spectacular at Wilmot Raceway on Tuesday, June 29.
Burlington's Mike Sullivan captured his first ever 20-lap Autometer/Brewington Electric Wisconsin wingLESS Sprints in the opening of two main events for that division. Sullivan worked his way around early race leader Ryan Zielski of Oconomowoc with three laps to go. At the finish it was Sullivan followed by runnerup Zielski, Allen Hafford of Beach Park, IL third, Salem's George Gaertner III fourth and Trevor's Jordan Paulsen fifth.
"The car's power steering went out at the end, the motor began running rough, and I almost hit the wall coming for the checkered," said Sullivan. "It's great to get a win in this class. I have to thank my wife, Nikki, the crew, everyone who supports us."
The second feature saw Jimmy Sivia of Winthrop Harbor, IL power through the field from 13th starting spot to win his second feature of the season. Tim Cox of Park City, IL, who led the first 13 circuits until Sivia soared past using the high side, ended up second. Dennis Spitz of Lewisburg, Ky. was third. Bristol's Chris Klemko fourth. Brown Deer's John Fahl fifth.
"Being able to win against the likes of Tim Cox is special," said Sivia. "Having to come from the back was a challenge, but we were up to it."
Genoa City's Nick Simons snapped the win streak of Chris Carlson of Caledonia at seven 20-lap modified features at Wilmot this season. Carlson and early leader Joe Huenfeld of Freeport tangled in turn four coming for the white flag. Huenfeld retired to the pits and on the restart Carlson had something mechanically wrong pulling off in turn one.
N. Simons went on the victory with Eagle's Steve Mueller second. Waterford's Mike Wittenburg was third. Waterford's Jeff Bodendorfer fourth. Bristol's John Dost fifth.
"I have to thank my family, all of the sponsors, and the great fans who support the track," said N. Simons, who was thanked in victory lane for all of his efforts along with the track prep crew of his father, Mike Simons and Jim Kuenfeld, who worked tirelessly for five days to get the track raceable after all of the rain.
Scott Ellis of Lake Villa, IL won his first 20-lap Bandit 4-Cylinder Stock Car feature of the season. Scott Ellis took the lead from Ryan Johnson eight laps from the finish and went on to the win. Union Grove's Dale Ehleiter, who started 14th in the 24-car field, came on to finish second. Pleasant Prarie's Steve Ellis, Scott's father, was third. Mt. Pleasant's Jessica McKellips was fourth. Ernie Herlt of Grayslake, IL fifth.
"The track was challenging with all of the rain, but I am glad the track crew got it so we could race," said Scott Ellis. "My dad, and everyone who helps on the car is a great support."
A huge fireworks show helped highlight the pre-holiday special with car load admission.
