CARLSON COLLECTS MOD CHECKERED! Wilmot Raceway Prepares for Wayne Daun / Al & Marie Winker Memorial Race! Wilmot, WI, May 18, 2013 – At last! The 2013 racing season got underway at Wilmot Raceway. Like many tracks in the upper Midwest weather has played a factor in opening season action at the third-mile clay oval located on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds. Tonight however fans got to enjoy the start of the 2013 racing season in style as the raceway presented its 2013 season opening event. In Modified action it was 2011 Wilmot Raceway champion Chris Carlson who worked his way to the front of the pack and then held off the challenges of Cameron Kuxhouse to pickup the win. Earlier in the night Carlson also collected his heat race victory giving him a sweep of the program. The main event itself would see mechanical gremlins eliminate over half the field before the checkered flag fell. While Carlson celebrated in victory lane, second place was contested between Cameron and his father Scott Kuxhouse. In this case youth overcame experience with Cameron besting his father Scott for runner-up honors. Jason Hyerdall would reach this finish line in fourth followed by Jimmy Morrison who earlier won his heat race completing the top five finishers. In open-wheeled action the mini-sprints presented plenty of wing to wing wheel to wheel competition. In the main event Tim Brannam would place himself in victory lane after stating the feature race in the third spot. Brannam wasted little time getting to the front of the pack and spent the majority of the contest fending off the challenges of 2012 division champion Nick Petska. Petska didn’t quite have the speed to find a way by Brannam and had to settle for second place honors this evening. Kyle Koch would finish third while Scott Johnson and Mark Heinart came from deep in the field to complete the top five finishers. Fans of a little fender rubbing action were not disappointed as the Street Stocks traded a little paint during their main event. Charles Pinkalla spent the majority of the race dueling with 2011 division titleholder Pat Rossman as the pair fought for the lead. Pinkalla would come out on top of the battle to collect the win with Rossman having to settle for second. Last season’s champ Rob Maule would finish third ahead of Vincey Heywood and Jason Condrad who completed the top five. The 4 cylinders presented a pair of feature winners in their main event with defending champ Joe Summers for winning Pro 4 feature chase to the finish line by Neils Kruse and Erik Grosch. While Vince Heywood outran Jason Jones and Rob Ehlenburg to take the Bandit main. Wilmot Raceway now prepares for its first special event of the 2013 racing season as the 900 horsepower winged 410 sprints of the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints make the first of five appearances at the track this season. The show will feature the Wayne Daun / Al and Marie Winkler Memorial race. Last season Balog established a new track record during the event turning in a lap of 12.609 Seconds on the third-mile clay oval. The main event was captured by 2011 track champion Tommy Sexton who was able to fend off last year’s title winner Mike Kertscher. All three drivers are expected to be in attendance for the show this coming Saturday Night May 25th. A field of over 30 sprint cars are expected for the show which will also feature a full program for Street Stocks and Mini-Sprints. The grandstands will open at 5:00pm and fans are encouraged to arrive early to get their favorite seat for this show. Racing is set to start at 6:45pm. Adult admission is $20 and members of the military with an active ID receive a discount of $5. Young fans ages 8 through 11 are admitted for $10 and children 7 and under are admitted FREE. The Kenosha County Fairgrounds where the track resides is located just north of the intersection of county roads C and W in Wilmot, WI. Wilmot is located just 8 miles west of I-43 taking county highway C which is exit 345. For those seeking additional information please check out the track website at www.wilmotraceway.com or call the track on race day at 262-862-2090.

The Kenosha County Fairs’ Wilmot Raceway will try again to open their 2013 season this Saturday night, May 18th, with the first Family Night of the year. Just $10 for Adults, with kids 11 & under are FREE. The Don’s Auto & Machine Modifieds, R.A. Adams Enterprises / Advance Auto Parts Street Stocks, Fec’s Place / Outlaw race Parts Mini Sprints, and Massive Speed / Hawg Heaven Pro & Bandit 4′s will be in action. Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to Wilmot, and numerous other facilities yet this Spring. We at the Wilmot Raceway want everyone to know the effort has certainly been put forth and that we want to race as much as they do. The track crew has been working several days a week now for the past 3-4 weeks, and they’ve done a great job. Standing in water ankle deep last Friday digging trenches in hopes to expedite drainage, opening up and tightening up the track surface depending upon daily weather conditions, etc…. It costs us to cancel, obviously we’re not wanting to ever have to do that. The water table at the fairgrounds is just that high. The standing water in the back chute ditch hasn’t gone down at all. Hopefully with sun and warmer temps forecast the next 3-4 days things will improve. As a FYI, calls are made with good intent. We all want to race, and as stated last week there are always going to be some made that don’t turn out as planned, such as those made by others this Spring with the best of intentions on trying to get a show in and then having to eventually send everyone home after hours of trying and with both racers and fans on premise. This happened three times in our region this weekend (atleast) that we know of, twice to our north the other to our south. We’re all trying. Some calls go as intended, some (no mattter how you try) simply don’t. All are made with good intent. Anyway, here’s hoping for good weather and great night of racing this Saturday. If the wet trend continues, we will look at adding dates or possibly extending the season. This isn’t just a Wilmot thing, it’s a regional thing. Some tracks have lost 6 shows this Spring all ready, or worse. Thanks, Wilmot Raceway

It’s Ground Hog Day at Wilmot Raceway. Despite the efforts put forth, the pits weren’t coming around enough to move forward with tonight’s show. Somewhat similar situation to last week, though this week it wasn’t the track, it was the pit area. The KCF made the call between 12:30 & 1:00 pm today. The crew did a great job fixing the track from last week and other than one real wet spot on the back chute, the track looked good. We didn’t get the sun we needed this morning. When the fairboard made the call, it wasn’t looking good, no sun, pits were terrible, and a forecast in the 40′s by race time. They decided it was not in their best financial interest to move forward tonight, plus the definite uncertainty of getting the pits ready for big haulers. The back pit was definitely not going to be available. The decision was to catch most teams before they left, and we knew several central IL teams we’re enroute. Tough call, but this wasn’t going to be a cheap night, with race time temps in 40′s, NASCAR on TV, and at that time things weren’t looking good. So they made the call. Ofcourse the sun has come out in spurts since and “maybe” with a few more hours of work we could have got the haulers in, but not at 3pm and not without some getting stuck. The track staff wants to race as much as anybody, devoted our entire day (since 6am) and have nothing to show for it. But a call was made and right or wrong they did what they thought was best. They want to race too. Advertising, fuel for the equipment, a crew was working, concessions, etc were all purchased with hopes of racing. Thankfully, there were a few race team members there when the call was made, they were even asked their opinion of the pit situation. They know the effort being put forth. Again, maybe we could have got it to the point where we could have eventually got the haulers in, but what if we couldn’t? So extremely disappointed again because of not racing, thought I’d go watch my son’s ball game this afternoon. But guess what, it was called off because of wet field conditions.

We are teching these closely, and have been in contact with Holley and other area tracks concerning this process and feel all of us are on the same page. Holley has provided us with (new) carb to use in the tech process. This rule was instituted here at Wilmot, and in much of the country, to help even the playing field and keep costs down in this class. From entry level to outlaw, and others in between, the Wilmot Raceway offers several classes to choose from.

The Wilmot Raceway regretfully has to pull the plug on their scheduled season opener tonight, May 4th. While the track crew has been working since 7am and were beginning to make progress following yesterday’s rain, a shower has just come through adding to a all ready saturated grounds. We appreciate the efforts of the crew and unfortunately Wilmot Raceway is now added to the long list of race tracks throughout the Midwest who have had to cancel this weekend. Please join us next week for the first of our Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Specials plus Mods and Mini Sprints will also be on the card.

The Wilmot Raceway hosted a tech and practice day Sunday afternoon (April 28th). A good number of cars took advantage of the opportunity and went thru tech and turned in some laps. All 5 Wilmot classes were represented, particularly a solid turn out of some really top notch looking Modifieds. Really good to see a strong showing the 4′s too, plus some rookie Mini Sprint racers. Even a Late Model, Midget, and Vintage Mod were on hand. Special thanks to Nick & Mike Simons for having the track in great shape for the afternoon session. And thanks to the KCF as they continued to add to our track prep inventory as we now have a “tiller” which should aid in the track prep process. Also thanks to Todd Booker and the gang for coming up with a new (actually not new, but different) officials trailer. We’ve added some new faces to our staff and look forward to a great 2013. It certainly had a good kick-off Sunday as everything went well. For opening night this Saturday May 4th, pit gates will open at 2pm as several cars still need to be teched, and we’re taking the process seriously. You must be teched before racing Saturday, so tech will be open from 2:00-5:15pm on Saturday for Mods, Streets, and 4′s…..and please don’t wait til the last minute on Saturday. And FYI Steets, we are checking carbs! Let’s hope for some good weather as we look to go green flag racing this Saturday night at Wilmot. All 5 reg divisions will be on hand (Sprints, Mods, streets, Mini Sprints, 4′s). Grandstand gates open at 5. Look forward to seeing everyone at Wilmot this Saturday night!
