BY MICHAEL H. BABICZ - (Wilmot, Wis., Saturday, May 24, 2014)–Six-time Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association (IRA) Winged Outlaw Sprint Car Series Champion Bill Balog of Hartland finally scored a feature victory in the 30-lap headliner on Saturday, May 24 capping off Wilmot (Wis.) Raceway’s Memorial Day Weekend Spectacular.
Balog, who was charging up from his fourth row starting spot, inherited the lead as the winningest driver in IRA history scored his 63rd career main event win, but first in four outings this season. Jordan Goldesberry of Springfield, Illinois outlasted Bill Rose of Planfield, Indiana to take second. Sheboygan’s Scotty Thiel came across fourth. Pleasant Prarie’s Todd Daun finished fifth. Brian Kristan of Zion, Illinois finished sixth. Defending Wilmot regular season and 2013 IRA Rookie of the Year Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam, after having to come through the “B” Main Last Chance Qualifier, after starting nineteenth in the 22-car field came through the field impressively to place seventh. Burnett’s Lance Fassbender finished eighth. IRA point leader and winner of two features already this season, Pleasant Prarie’s Philip Mock, overcame heat race woes to win the “B” Main and recoverd to finish ninth. Salem’s Kris Spitz completed the top 10.
Jones led wire to wire, but the street stock feature was not without its interruptions. The “big one” occurred on lap 10 when a spinning car triggered an accordion turn two pileup of at least eight cars, two of which ended up in a V-shape over the top of another car. No drivers were injured, but at least four ended up out for the night. Jones became the third different feature winner of the season despite a fast closing Dustin Richards of Bristol who finished a strong second. Cody Erickson of Algonquin, Illinois was third. Paddock Lake’s Dan Huber fourth. Bristol’s Ronnie Mink in his first start of the season fifth. Silver Lake’s Gerry Stollenwerk sixth. Chuck Shaer of Lake Villa, Illinois seventh. John Maki of Antioch eighth in his first outing of the year. Burlington’s Jason Condrad overcame a scary fire in his heat race which was caused by a broken transmission line to make the feature and finish ninth. Erin Pusateri of Johnsburg, Illinois rounded out the top ten.
Representatives of the Southeastern Wisconsin Auto Racing Hall of Fame along with several vintage race cars were on hand.
A special Memorial Day Weekend pre-race ceremony was held including the sprint cars of Darrell Dodd of Beach Park, Illinois and Roy Dodd, who owns the car driven by his son, Chris Dodd, trackside commemorating the passing of Darrell and Roy’s father, Junior Dodd of Beach Park, earlier this year. Junior Dodd was a long time competitor in the old style modifieds and was one of founders of the IRA, along with Ray Toft and Whitey Harris.
Wilmot Raceway is hosting a IRA Founders Night on Saturday, June 21, the next time the traveling winged sprint car warriors invade their original home track. Toft and Harris are slated to be on hand.
Next up for Wilmot Raceway is Family Night on Saturday, May 31 featuring the Don’s Auto Parts & Machine Service Modifieds, R.A. Adams Enterprises Street Stocks, WIMSA Mini-Sprints plus the four-cylinder stock cars featuring the Massive Pro-4’s and the Hawg Heaven Bandits.
Grandstands open at 5:00 pm with the first race at 7:00 pm. Wilmot Raceway, a one-third mile banked clay oval, is located on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds. For the latest information go to the track web site www.wilmotraceway.com.
