WILMOT RACEWAY RAIN WINS

WILMOT FIRST OF SEASON, IRA FOUNDERS NIGHT RESET FOR JULY 19
BY MICHAEL H. BABICZ
(Wilmot, Wis., Saturday, June 21, 2014)–The first official race night of summer marked the initial cancellation this season for Wilmot(Wis.) Raceway on Saturday, June 21.
Heavy thunderstorms and a tornado warning forced the cancellation just after the pit area began filling up with race cars for the night’s action.
The special evening recognizing the original founders of the Interstate Racing Association (IRA) has been reset for the next return of the traveling Bumper to Bumper IRA outlaw sprint car series on Saturday, July 19.
The IRA was founded in 1968 by Ray Toft, Whitey Harris and the late Junior Dodd, who passed away earlier this year. Toft and Harris both had planned to be on hand prior to the cancellation.
Next up for the one-third mile clay oval located on the Kenosha County Fairgrounds is Family Night on Saturday, June 28. Modifieds, street stocks and 4-cylinder stock cars are scheduled on the card.
Grandstands open at 5 p.m. with racing slated for 7 p.m. For updates check the trackside hotline 262-862-2090 or www.wilmotraceway.com.
Point leaders heading into the June 28 race program include defending champion Chris Carlson of Union Grove in the modifieds. After Carlson took the first four feature events of the season, Burlington’s Mike Sullivan and Scott Kuxhouse of Antioch, IL have captured the last two.
In the 4-cylinder stock car bandit division Brian Hillringhouse of South Milwaukee leads Gary Mondus of Streamwood, IL by six points, 572-566.
Rob Maule of Hebron, IL, driving the Tom Homan Family Race Team of Antioch entry, has won three street stock features in a row and four out of the six run in that division. Racine’s Charlie Pinkalla, defending champion, won the main event on opening night. David Jones of North Chicago, IL won his first feature ever to end a 29-year drought. Maule leads Pinkalla by 18 points, 812-794.
The closest current battle for the division leadership is in the Wisconsin-Illinois Mini-Sprints. Nick Daywalt of Hubertus has a one point advantage, 549-548, over Adam Schroeder of Zion, IL. The mini-sprints are not scheduled to return to action until Independence Day weekend on Saturday, July 5.
The IRA schedule has been won by Mother Nature more than any driver on the race track this season with the Wilmot washout being the fifth event cancelled this year.
Defending champion Bill Balog has won four features in a row, having started his streak at Wilmot on Memorial Day weekend. Phillip Mock of Pleasant Prarie has two feature wins. Craig Dollansky picked up the other main event win.
The IRA has off until Saturday, July 11 when they travel to the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam.
