KERTSCHER COLLECTS AGAIN IN WILMOT RACEWAY SPRINT ACTION – JANSSEN TOPS STREET STOCK MAIN

AUGUST 24, 2012; Wilmot, WI – Race fans in attendance for the show at Wilmot Raceway on Saturday evening witnessed a racing event contested under nearly ideal racing conditions.  Track officials were able to provide drivers with a fast, tacky racing surface which meant high speed wheel to wheel racing was to be had in abundance on the third-mile clay oval.

Heading up the evening winners was Mike Kertscher who topped the Goodyear 410 Winged Sprint main event, it was his second straight victory in weekly competition at the track having scored top honors in the last Wilmot Raceway point program held a week ago.  Kertscher was able to run down Johnny Fahl after the lone caution in the main event and in doing so extended his point lead.  In Street Stock action John Janssen was able to fend off the challenges of division title contender Charlie Pinkalla to earn his first feature victory of the 2012 season.  The 4 cylinders were also in action this evening and in spite of a low turnout of competitors the fender rubbing action between team mates Brandon Feit and Andrew Kierdrewski kept the fans entertained as Feit barely held on for the win.  A group of vintage modifieds were also on hand this tonight giving fans a chance to witness machines which had been popular on area ovals from the 1950’s through the early 1980’s.
A field of twenty-one 410 winged sprints took the green flag for their feature contest this evening with Dennis Spitz motoring away from Patrick Hayes at the drop of the green flag to set the opening pace.  Spitz time at the front was short lived as Johnny Fahl would work past Spitz for the top spot on lap three.   2011 Wilmot Raceway champion Tommy Sexton and current track point leader Kertscher would reach the third and fourth positions before the completion of lap five.

On lap seven Kertscher would make a bold move to work under Sexton and he then powered to the outside of Spitz to take over the second spot before lap eight began.  Fahl meanwhile had built up a 12 car length lead on the field and was already working lapped traffic.

On the following lap the caution flag would fly for the a pair of spins by Jereme Schroeder and Kris Spitz. It would prove to be the only slowdown of the contest as the balance of the 25 lap contest would go uninterrupted.

Kertscher wasted little time in putting the pressure on Fahl, sweeping to his outside on the restart before motoring ahead to take over the top spot.  It was a position he would not relinquish.

Out front Kertscher built a commanding lead while Sexton sought a way past Fahl to reach the runner-up slot.  Sexton would make the pass on Fahl with a handful of laps remaining in the event and though he was able to close on Kertscher as the leaders encountered lapped traffic Kertscher still had a dozen car length lead as the checkered flag fell.   Sexton would settle for runner-up honors.  Todd Daun earned his first podium finish of the season after taking third in the closing laps.  It was his best performance since returning to the cockpit after a year and a half away from sport.  Scott Uttech claimed the fourth spot just ahead of Fahl who completed the top five finishers.

Not to be outdone the Street Stock division would entertain fans with a pack style battle for the lead throughout much of the contest.

21 participants would accept the green flag for the main event. Gerry Stollenwerk would start of the pole of the contest but it would be outside front row starter Ronnie Mink who would set the pace early in the race.  Dustin Holland was quick to join the fray working to the inside of Mink by lap two and the pair would run wheel to wheel for the next several circuits.

Holland would make the outside line work to his advantage as he slowly pulled away from Mink who began to slip back in the field allowing John Janssen and Charlie Pinkalla to reach second and third respectively.  Holland would drop from contention with a spin into the infield on lap four, turning the lead over to Jenssen and moments later he would retire from the contest with mechanical problems.

It was now Jenssen’s turn to show the way as he fought off heavy pressure from Pinkalla and Rob Maule who had reached the third position.

Jenssen got a brief reprieve from the heavy pressure as Maule began to tussle with Pinkalla for the second spot.  The battle between Maule and Pinkalla had more than just a position on the track at stake as the pair are locked in a duel for the division point lead.

With a handful of laps to go in the contest the only caution of the event flew when Joey Marcomb came to a stop in turn two.  During the caution fourth running Dan Huber had his machine begin to smoke heavily and he would retire to the pit area.

With the green flag returning Janssen would show his determination as he fought off both Maule and Pinkalla the remaining distance to score the victory. Pinkalla would slip past Maule to reach second and gain some critical points in the 2012 title chase.  Over the final laps defending division champ Pat Rossman would also work by Maule to reach third.  Rossman’s run was especially impressive as he had put on a passing exhibition charging from his sixteenth starting spot to reach third.   Maule would settle for fourth ahead of Mink who completed the top five finishers.

The program would conclude with the main event for the Massive Speed Pro 4?s / Hawg Heaven Bandit 4?s.  In spite of low numbers the drivers on hand put on a good show with the top four staying in close contact for the first half of the event.  The race eventually boiled down to a battle between team mates Brandon Feit and Andrew Kierdrewski.   The pair would trade paint several times over the final laps with Feit repelling the challenges of Kierdrewski for the win.  Dan Knight would reach the line in third ahead of Jason Jones and Pro 4 point leader Joe Summers who ran the feature contest with an ill handling car after damage from tagging the wall in the heat race.
